25 FEBRUARY 2005

Princess Mary of Denmark received a rapturous welcome from well-wishers as she arrived in Sydney on Friday. The stylish Australian who was making her first trip Down Under since becoming a European royal, looked radiant in a cream coloured coat and floral scarf as she accepted a bouquet of flowers from a young admirer.

The build-up of Mary mania has hit a fever pitch in the weeks leading up to her arrival, with her return generating public interest similar to that which surrounded Princess Diana at the height of her popularity. The fashionable royal has graced the covers of every major magazine and newspaper and been the dominant topic of conversation across the nation.

Mary was originally due to arrive on Sunday, but moved her trip forward to give her and Frederik a day to themselves before their official engagements begin on Sunday. The crown prince arrived in Sydney earlier this week and has spent his time soaking up the warm Australian sun while preparing for an international yachting regatta.

The royal couple's first official duty will be to challenge each other in an Australia versus Denmark yacht race in the harbour on Sunday.

The hectic 13-day tour of Oz wraps up in Mary's hometown of Hobart on March 11. The Danish royals will attend state and charity dinners in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne plus a special reception hosted by Prime Minister John Howard in Parliament House, before spending some private time with Mary's family.

There was no doubt who was the belle of the ball when Australia's favourite royal arrived for a gala dinner in Sydney. Princess Mary was greeted by a huge crowd of well-wishers when she made her entrance at a fundraising bash for the Australian Red Cross on Tuesday night.

And although there were plenty of elegant gowns to be seen on the night, it was the Danish royal who shone the brightest. Accompanied by her husband Crown Prince Frederik, the 33-year-old set flashbulbs blazing with a pink silk halterneck top and midnight-blue floor-length skirt.

It was a stroke of good luck that the little girl who presented her with flowers outside the venue seemed to share her impeccable taste. The youngster handed the VIP guest a bunch of bright pink roses that complemented her outfit perfectly. Also turning heads at the glitzy bash were singer Delta Goodrem, in a full-length yellow tea rose gown, and Olivia Newton-John, who opted for green chiffon.

Since they started their official visit on Sunday Mary and her husband have been welcomed by hordes of fans everywhere they have gone. And their popularity was further boosted when Frederik, who came a humble 23rd in a yacht race on Sunday, proved what a good sport he was by buying beers for all the other crews.

Glamour

3 MARCH 2005

Denmark's princesses lived up to their reputation for elegance as they stepped out in style at events on opposite sides of the globe.

Princess Mary made a stunning appearance in a full-length off-the-shoulder red gown and a diamond collar with matching drop earrings at a state dinner at the New South Wales Government House.

The event capped off a busy day for the Danish royals, as earlier that day Princess Mary had attended a luncheon hosted by the Mental Health Foundation. Her husband, Prince Frederik, spent the day with his Danish crew battling on the high seas as they had earlier competed in the Rolex Farr-40 World Sailing Championships.

Meanwhile in the cooler climes of Scandinavia, Princess Alexandra continued on with her two-day visit to Finland. The Hong Kong-born royal was looking radiant in a retro-style white hat and matching coat as she named the Finnish goodwill ambassadors who will head-up bicentennial celebrations for the birth of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen.

To kick-off the eight-month-long celebration of Hans Christian Andersen's 200th birthday 40,000 guests have been invited to Copenhagen for the April 2 festivities. Denmark's entire royal family will be in attendance as well as monarchs from Sweden and the Netherlands.
