On June 23 Prince William reaches a crucial turning point in his life. The quiet royal, who turns 23 just two days beforehand, will graduate from St Andrews and in so doing add a BA to the numerous titles he was born with. Waving goodbye to the historic institution will also mark a new beginning for Wills as he faces the challenges and responsibilities of his increasingly public role.

In this hellomagazine.com special report we take a look back at the last four years and ask what the future holds for Britain's most popular royal

'BACHELOR' PRINCE

On June 23 the Scottish town of St Andrews will be deluged with photographers, reporters and not a few royal fans as Prince William receives his degree. In addition to his father Charles, both the Queen and Prince Philip are expected to attend the ceremony which will see the second-in-line become a bachelor of the arts.

Wills and his girlfriend Kate Middleton, along with about 200 other students, are to receive their qualifications in the 600-year-old Younger Hall from university chancellor Sir Kenneth Dover. In keeping with tradition Wills and Kate will don black graduation gowns and a black and cherry hood when they take to the stage, though they may decide to slip into something more comfortable for the celebrations that are bound to ensue afterwards. The graduation ball, held the following day, takes place in two marquees erected on campus, and locals are anticipating more celebrations in subsequent days, as some 1,500 alumni receive their hard-earned titles.

A FOND FAREWELL

The celebrations that will accompany the young Prince's graduation will also be tinged with sadness, as this summer Wills bids adieu to the campus in the knowledge he will not be returning next autumn. For the past four years the Fife town has offered him a friendly and welcoming environment in which to pursue his studies, largely free from press intrusion.

Prince Charles' son says he has enjoyed the opportunity to take in a movie or simply step out and buy a few groceries without being besieged by photographers and fans. He will also remember the ancient town for being the place where he met girlfriend Kate Middleton. The couple first set eyes on each other when they began studying history of art in 2001 and, although William switched to geography in his second year, they have remained inseparable ever since. It seems likely St Andrews will also miss its royal resident, since the "Prince William" effect, as it has come to be known, has helped boost both tourism and university applications.

ROMANTIC RETREAT

Wills and Kate will also be keenly aware of the implications his graduation has for their relationship. For the past two years, the couple have shared a secluded cottage on the outskirts of St Andrews with two other students, but now they are leaving the security and privacy of their university life behind.

Before deciding what careers to choose, the pair are planning a romantic trip around the world. A month visiting the sights of Asia and Africa will give them plenty of time to enjoy each other's company and decide best how to tackle the road ahead. It is also reported that a new mansion Prince Charles is building on Harewood End estate – a Duchy of Cornwall property located between Hereford and Ross-on-Wye – may be destined for his eldest son, meaning the pair could have a base from which to build their life together.

BELLE OF ST ANDREW'S

Though Wills continues to top lists of the "world's most eligible bachelors", the reality is that he is very much a taken man. Kate Middleton has been his constant companion during his time at St Andrews, and her presence during family breaks in Switzerland has sent a clear signal that the Prince sees the relationship as a serious one.

Kate, whose parents run a mail-order company supplying children's party accessories, comes from a solidly upper-middle class background. Friends say it was her feistiness and intelligence that first caught the second-in-line's attention, though the pretty 22-year-old brunette, who is credited with persuading William to stay at St Andrews when he was considering dropping out, also made quite an impression when she took to the catwalk in a gauzy, underwear-revealing dress for a student fashion show.

With a degree in history of art, it is thought she will work for a spell at Sotheby's or Christie's. And despite the fact William says he doesn't want to get married for at least another five years, he is expected to personally foot the bill to provide her with a bodyguard.

DUTY CALLS

As Prince William grew into adulthood it was often noted he had inherited his mother's good looks. And that wasn't all the handsome royal received from Diana; he also shares her enormous popularity both in Britain and further afield.

The "Pin-up Prince", as he is sometimes known, has made it clear he intends to continue the late Princess' charitable and humanitarian work. As he embarks upon the next era of his life Wills, who seems to be rising to the challenge of his position, is readying himself for more prominent and demanding official duties. At the end of June he is due to represent the monarchy during the British Lions rugby tour of New Zealand and will represent the Queen at a wreath-laying ceremony to mark the end of World War II. Royal experts say his grandmother, who is now 79, is likely to start reducing her workload as the second-in-line takes a more high-profile role.

FAMILY TIES

The enormous affection which the British public holds for Prince William is very much reflected among the members of the Windsor household. It is well known that he has a very close relationship with both his grandparents, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, while the Queen Mother felt strongly enough about her great grandson to give him a luxurious cottage on the Balmoral Estate.

Among the younger royals, Wills is closest to his brother Harry, though he is also seen out and about with cousins Peter and Zara Phillips, who has a reputation for teasing him unmercifully, much to William's amusement. The strongest influence in his life, however, is his father the Prince of Wales. Charles has gone to great lengths to support and guide his eldest son along what has, at times, been a difficult road. This was much in evidence during the painful days and weeks that followed the tragic death of his mother, Princess Diana, in 1997. Over time Wills has shown great courage and character not only in coming to terms with the loss of his mum, but also in developing a healthy relationship with his stepmother Camilla.

SOLDIER, SOLDIER

Wills has yet to make an official announcement about his plans for the future but it is widely expected he will join younger brother Harry (pictured) at the world's most prestigious officer training academy. "Definitely I would like to go to Sandhurst," he said last year, before joking: "That's why I put my brother in as a guinea pig first."

The Prince may decide to take a year out to work on a conservation project before beginning his military training, but sources close to the Clarence House say he is more likely to enrol in January 2006. His sibling is already finding out just how tough life at the institution can be, but William insists he is determined to be treated like any other recruit. In characteristically down to earth fashion, the future king has even declared his willingness follow in the Duke of York's footsteps by going into battle. "If I was to join the Army I'd want to go where my men went, and I'd want to do what they did," he explained. "The last thing I want to do is be mollycoddled or wrapped up in cotton wool."

Tense time for William

11:59am 10th June 2005

Prince William

Nailbiting times: Prince William

Prince William gets his degree results tomorrow after spending four years studying at St Andrews University.

The second in line to the throne will be able to access his final grade online from 9am.

Britain's most famous undergraduate said last year that he was on track to get an upper second class honours (2:1) in his geography MA (Master of Arts), providing his dissertation and final exams went well.

The Prince, who celebrates his 23rd birthday later this month, had a somewhat rocky start to his life in the isolated Scottish town in Fife. In his first term, he struggled to adjust but eventually settled down after switching his course from history of art to geography.

In the end, St Andrews became a haven where the locals grew used to having a royal pin-up around town.

William found a sanctuary away from the media, even sharing a house with girlfriend Kate Middleton.

Tomorrow morning, the Prince and hundreds of other students at the university will be able to access their degree classifications though a secure website.

From Monday, they will also receive a confirmation letter by post.

With his university experience at an end and military training beckoning, William is preparing to fly to New Zealand, without Kate, to join the British Lions squad on their rugby tour.

During his stay on the islands, he will also carry out his first solo engagements on behalf of the Queen to celebrate the end of the Second World War - marking a new era of royal duties for the Prince.

William, who plans to sign up for the Army and join Sandhurst like his younger brother Prince Harry, has spoken about being "wary" of developing his public role too soon.

He will be one of about 1,400 St Andrews students who graduate in the town at the end of June.

His father the Prince of Wales got a lower second class honours (2:2) from Trinity College, Cambridge, for his history degree.

He also swapped courses, having initially picked archaeology and anthropology.

Charles was the first heir to the throne to take a degree.

The Earl of Wessex, who studied at Jesus College, Cambridge, was also awarded a 2:2.

William, who had seven lectures a week in his final year, wrote his 10,000 word dissertation on the coral reefs of Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean.

9 JUNE 2005

Having recently completed his finals at St Andrews University, Prince William is enjoying a well-earned break in The Hebrides. The second-in-line, along with several friends, has travelled to the Isle of Mull where he is now ensconced in a self-catering cottage.

Residents in the harbour town of Tobermory might be forgiven for feeling a little star-struck, but the royal visit is not their first brush with celebrity. Young TV fans will already be familiar with the village's pretty bungalows, as it was here that the popular children's series Balamory was filmed.

Wills is unlikely to join PC Plum and Josie Jump for any of their adventures, though, because he is intent on taking things easy until his graduation in two weeks' time. He and his chums were spotted chatting on the ferry from the Scottish mainland on Monday evening and they likewise turned heads when they visited a local pub to watch the British Lions play New Zealand team Taranaki on satellite TV.

Not everyone was aware of the 22-year-old's arrival, however. According to local reports, restaurant manager Hannah Haddock got quite a surprise when she noticed the future king was standing behind her in the queue at the town's grocery store. When the cashier asked whether they would be paying together, she could only smile and say: "No, separately will be fine."

Prince William - he's the brainiest royal yet

Jamie Doward
Sunday June 12, 2005
The Observer

Prince William is now Britain's brainiest royal. He made history yesterday when he was awarded an upper second honours degree - an achievement that outstrips all his predecessors.

The 22-year-old's father left Trinity College, Cambridge, with a lower second-class degree (2:2) in history and his uncle, the Earl of Wessex, gained a similar qualification in the same subject, from Jesus College, Cambridge.

No other members of the royal family have attended university. William's mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, left school with a CSE in domestic science while his brother, Prince Harry, opted for a military career at Sandhurst over academia. Clarence House announced the Prince had gained a 2:1 in his geography MA from St Andrews University shortly after he attended yesterday's Queen's birthday parade. At the ceremony, his stepmother, the Duchess of Cornwall, appeared on the famous Buckingham Palace balcony for the first time.

Camilla stood between her husband, the Prince of Wales, and William; and alongside the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh as they watched an RAF fighter flypast spearheaded by two Typhoon Eurofighters.

William and his stepmother then travelled together in a carriage to the annual Trooping the Colour parade which saw some 1,220 troops take part in a display of precision formation marching and horsemanship choreographed to military band music. VIPs attending included the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and his wife, Cherie, as well as the Defence Secretary, John Reid.

Earlier in the day, William had been one of hundreds of St Andrews students who went online to check their results on a secure website. A Clarence House spokesman said: 'William got an upper second class honours. He's delighted. Everyone is absolutely delighted. His father's very proud.'

Owing to changes in data protection, university grades are no longer posted on notice boards for all to see. William had hinted last year that he was hoping to get a 2:1 but said a lot depended on his 10,000-word dissertation on the coral reefs of Rodrigues.

With his university experience at an end and military training beckoning, William is preparing to fly to New Zealand, to watch the British Lions squad on their rugby tour.

During his stay on the islands, he will also carry out his first solo official engagements on behalf of the Queen, when he attends a ceremony marking the end of the Second World War.

Prince William gains 2:1 degree

Prince William
Prince William studied for four years in ScotlandPrince William has achieved a 2:1 honours in his geography MA degree from St Andrews University, Clarence House has announced.

The announcement was made as the prince attended the annual Trooping the Colour with other members of the Royal Family.

William, 22, logged on to a secure internet site to find out his Master of Arts results on Saturday.

He did better than his father who received a lower second class honours in history from Cambridge.

Proud father

"William got an upper second class honours," a Clarence House spokesman said.

"He's delighted. Everyone is absolutely delighted. His father's very proud."

William, second in line to the throne, had earlier said he hoped to get a 2:1 but that a lot depended on his 10,000-word dissertation on the coral reefs of Rodrigues.

Throughout William's four-year degree the public has seen a limited glimpse of his student life in Scotland, including footage of him relaxing and pursuing his sporting interests.

Newspapers agreed to show restraint in their coverage of the prince to allow him to enjoy as normal a student life as possible.

Solo engagement

In interviews to mark his 21st birthday in June 2003, the prince said he had had initial doubts about staying at the university, but eventually settled down.

He also changed his degree from history of art to geography.

William intends to join the Armed Forces, but will first travel to New Zealand for the Lions rugby tour and perform his first solo royal engagement.

He will represent the Queen at a commemoration of the end of World

after university
23.06.2005: Clarence House releases a statement on Prince William's plans after university.

PRINCE WILLIAM – PLANS AFTER UNIVERSITY

Prince William, who graduates from the University of St Andrews today, will undertake a series of work experience placements in the UK this autumn.

William is keen to broaden his knowledge and gain experience of a number of different professions. At the same time, the Prince is also continuing to consider actively joining the Armed Forces. He recently passed preliminary examinations which would allow him to apply for Army officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, if he wishes to do so.

The work experience placements will include:

• Spending time with a financial institution in London, gaining an insight into international finance and commerce

• Learning more about land management on a country estate

• Helping with a mountain rescue team

Prince William said today:

“I very much hope that these work placements will give me hands-on experience in three very different, but important areas.

“The work experience in the City was something I was particularly keen to do as I feel that this is an area in which I could learn a lot, and it may well help me with charitable fundraising in the future.

“The land management experience will hopefully allow me to develop skills and an understanding of how to best look after the countryside.

“Joining a mountain rescue team really appealed to me as I can learn at first hand how these amazing people help save lives on a regular basis.”

The placements were announced by Clarence House today as Prince William received his certificate for his 2:1 Masters degree in Geography from the Vice-Chancellor of the University of St Andrews, Dr Brian Lang, in front of Her Majesty The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay (as The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall are known in Scotland).

Prince William said:

“Today is a very special day for me and I am delighted that I can share it with my family, and in particular with my grandmother, who has made such an effort to come having been under the weather.”

After the graduation ceremony, Prince William, accompanied by his father and The Duchess of Rothesay, will make a private visit to the local police station.

Explaining why he was visiting the police station, Prince William said:

“I really wanted to specifically thank Fife Constabulary for the constant support which they have given me and to wish them well for the future.”

Of his four years at university, Prince William said:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at St Andrews and I shall be very sad to leave. I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who has made my time here so enjoyable. I have been able to lead as “normal” a student life as I could have hoped for and I am very grateful to everyone, particularly the locals, who have helped to make this happen.

“I am going to miss being in Scotland – I have got used to the weather and all the golf chat!”

Looking to the future, Prince William said:

“Although I will miss being at St Andrews, I am very much looking forward to the challenges and opportunities which the future brings – and not least, hopefully, an ultimately triumphant Lions tour of New Zealand.”
