LOGRONO — Dressed in solemn black, Letizia, the Princesa of Asturias, gave her first public address in tribute to the Guardia Civil.
A little nervous, the former television presenter paid tribute to the Rural Action Unit of the quasi-military Guardia Civil, which is based in Logrono, in northern Spain.
The Princess, who is almost four months pregnant, spoke of the "gratitude of the whole of society" towards the Guardia Civil in the fight against terrorism and crime.
She added: "The officers continue to do their work with the same dedication and efficiency with the national flag as stimulation."
The Princess said the officers continued to work "tirelessly and at
times heroically".
Letizia said it was a "great honour to be able to preside, for the first time, with my husband(Crown Prince Felipe) in a solemn act to present the flag of Spain" in tribute to this prestigious unit.
She also said she wanted to make a "emotional" tribute to the victims of terrorism and their families".
